We arrived in scorching hot Rome with no accommodation booked, as prices for one night in Rome range between R2000 & R3000. Not only did we need to find wifi to wish our dads Happy Fathers Day, we also needed to scroll through 'Booking.com' to find a hotel that we could afford for the night. We'll share our little secret with you - book the hotel the night before, or on the day if you can. You'll get a last minute deal which is normally half the price. In this case, we got a hotel that opened onto the Trevi Fountain for 75% off, and boy did we make full use of it! As we hadn't slept for most of the night on the train, we checked into our hotel 5 minutes after booking it, got a few photos at the Trevi Fountain and Pantheon by day... AND THEN SLEPT!
In the morning, we woke up and moved to our Contiki hotel where we met our Contiki family for the next 13 days. Before we met up with our Contiki Tour Manager (Christina) and our Italian bus driver and a great magician (Pino), Bruce and I sneaked a visit to the Popes Cathedral.
To begin our Contiki all together on the bus, we got a tour of Rome by night and then indulged in an "all you can eat Pizza night" with a demonstration of how to make italian pizza. The following day consisted of The Coliseum, the Roman Forum, the Trevi Fountain, The Spanish Steps, The Pantheon, The Fountain of the Four Seasons, and the famous Vatican City with its Sistine Chapel. Yes, we accomplished a lot in Rome IN A WHOPPING FORTY-ONE DEGREES CELSIUS! Not even the seven South Africans on our tour could handle the suns heat, especially considering that we had to wear clothing that covered our knees and shoulders for the cathedrals. This resulted in us ordering a salad for lunch.
Rome is absolutely beautiful and definitely one of our favorite cities in Italy, along with Tuscany, Venice and Florence. Bruce still has a soft heart for Milan!
