Day 17 Cont. - First day in Bruges, Belgium

We arrived in Bruges at around 2pm, and each purchased a Bruges City Card from the tourist desk. The City card is valid for 48 hours, and gets you into nearly every museum and main attraction - as well as a ride on a boat in the canals and bike hire. We took a bus to our hostel at the Bauhaus, and checked in. Within a few minutes we were out on the Bruges streets exploring the most spectacular town we have come across! Bruges is known for Beer, Chocolate, Diamond Cutting (The first ever engagement ring was given here), waffles, lace, and french fries! Sound like heaven, and looks like it too!

We started off at the Chocolate Museum (Choco-Story). If you a big chocolate fan, you would love this! We learnt about the history of chocolate, the recipe, the different types of chocolates - and the process (Cocoa beans come from mainly Africa). The tour ended off with a questionnaire to find out which chocolate best suites you, and then a chocolate making demonstration and tasting! Look how many cocoa pods are needed to make a small amount of chocolate. Also, if you on a "diet" - stick to dark chocolate ;)

We then went to the the lamp museum, which holds the most lamps in a single place - in the world! We saw Leonardo Da Vinci's lamp design, we saw one of the first light bulbs, and we saw the timeline and history of light - from fire to electricity. If you didn't know, Belgium is known for creating the first artificial spark! We were also really surprised to see a statue of Iain Knox in a museum in Bruges. (Bruce is just checking that you reading our blog Iain?)

We then went to to the Friet Museum. We were amazed to find out that Belgium came up with fries, even though they are called "French Fries." The history went all the way back to potatoes, and the museum really made a point of how healthy potatoes are for you. Hmm... But fries? Well, we pretended. When we got to the end of the tour, there were fries waiting for us and we didn't hold back.

After the Friet Museum, we walked to the Rozenhoedkaai, which links the Belfry to the city's network of canals. This is the most photographed location in Bruges, and is truly a living postcard. On our walk back to the hostel we stopped for a Belgium Chocolate rice crispy treat at "The Chocolate Crown."

Before we made it back to our room, we had to stop at the Bauhaus pub for happy hour - €1 for Belgium beers between 6 & 7! There is so much to do here, so tomorrow will be jam packed with stuff to do and see! Here is just a sneak peak of our photos from today. We especially looking forward to tomorrow's Beer Tour, Museum & TASTING!!!
